The Brief


St Austell Brewery were looking at a potential refurbishment of the existing building whilst also investigating the full potential of the entire site, as a starting point they commissioned our services to provide


Topographical Survey of the site and its immediate surroundings

  1. Floor plans, including the public house, associated ancillary areas, all letting rooms and the staff accommodation

  2. Elevations of all external facades including full detailing



Our approach


As specified we began by establishing our primary control network which was to be related to Ordnance Survey grid and datum. We established the starting coordinates using our Leica Viva GS15 GNSS smart antenna and then quickly completed a closed traverse.

From this primary control network, we then went about collecting the data to complete the topographical survey which was captured with the Leica TS15 robotic total station.

The measured building survey was quite complex including three floors to be measured internally whilst minimizing disruption to the daily running of the business along with all external elevations. To speed up the data capture we went for laser scanning the external of the building with the Leica P40 scanner.

This allowed for rapid data capture from which we were able to extract both the 2D external elevations and also the buildings external footprint at all floor levels.

With the external footprints loaded into MBS software we were then able to add internal instrument control (starting and closing on primary control) and complete the floor plans rapidly and with the minimum amount of disruption.


Conclusion


All elements of the survey were delivered on time and to the required accuracies and specifications. We continue to work with St Austell Brewery who are themselves expanding following the recent acquisition of Bath Brewery. Our traditional approach and values combined with the ability to call on the most up to date equipment remains key to our ability to satisfy our clients demands.
